I reverted a little with regard to the kernel:

using their script. This worked! Although a good deal of tuning will be
needed (if possible).

The log file appended below resulted from startx after I
made a few changes to XF86Config-4 in order to get past what
seemed to be a mouse problem, and installed a more recent
kernel (not an easy task). I believe that both the X
server and the kernel are the most recent available
through apt.
