I have the exact same problem of flickering as described in bug #496979,
with a Radeon 7500 and XVideo.
Problem also solved by using the xshm driver in xine, or the x11 driver
in mplayer.

The problem appeared during an upgrade of x11-common while the package
xtel had been recently installed:

First some precisions. The problem seems to only appear when the X
server is killed while the login screen is displayed.
I compiled xdm without the patches debian/patches/*.diff

and tested it. The problem does not appear anymore i.e. the file
/var/run/xdm.pid remains af
