There seems to be a very similar bug with radeon cards not only for
powerpc. Details at

The patch shown there makes x server not to hang
and allows it to run sdl programs.

I am also seeing this on a PowerBook G4 (PowerPC). It worked when I
installed squeeze but stopped working on upgrade to wheezy.

Xterm is still *really* slow for me when background colors are set;
it's if jump-scrolling is disabled. For example:
