I'm running Debian sid, using xemacs 21.4.22-3.1, which is nearly a
year old. In the last couple of weeks, the editor window began
"leaving behind" copies of the red cursor box. See attached
screenshot. Redrawing the window (e.g. using CTRL-L) is enough to
clear up the cursors.

Don't, you're polluting your system. Proper solutions are documented here:
http://blog.mraw.org/2011/06/18/mesa_a_disturbance_in
I had the same problem, and made a link from directory /usr/lib/dri to
directory /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri.
Just guessing, but looks like a directory policy change that was not
propagated through to the driver.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou for this bug fix--it has been vexing me for
several weeks and I finally got a bug report ready only to find this one
instead!
I tried the patch on the version of xserver-xorg-core currently in sid,
and it fixes the problem perfectly.

Hi,
A fairly grim workaround is to disable hardware acceleration in
Flash; right click on it and using the settings pane click on the
tick next to 'Enable hardware acceleration'.
That gets me working full screen - it's faster than what I get
with nomodesetting but still somewhat grim.
