I have the same problem here with a synaptics touchpad. Here are some

I decided to try the newest mesa from experimental (7.8.2it's supposed
to be stable now, why isn't it in unstable?) to see if it would help.
Unfortunately, now both KMS and UMS show the same behavior in the game.

I confirm the issue on my newly configured Debian squeeze box.
Since there is a workaround (uninstall xserver-xorg-video-vmware)
it probably is okay to leave this at normal severity level, but
the unimpeded use of X --configure is quite important these days to
obtain the core of a useful X config

The bug is still present (after almost three years) on the latest 2.12 release,
now with both xvideo and opengl drivers (even forcing vsync in driconf). No way
to remove the tearing from scenes with horizontal scrolling. It's a regression
