I built a custom 2.6.33 kernel using the vanilla sources from git, and
the problem resolved itself. It appears whatever the problem was, it
was fixed upstream.

don't know if this makes sense/is related or not.

If I remove the Wacom specific lines in my xorg.conf, VT switching is
instant.

Like I said on the report the machine was going well on the -1 version of
the intel driver, it was only then I upgraded to -2 that it started failing,
furthermore, if I disable kms the machine is fine again.
Machine is completely stable, there can be no poblem with any hardware,
machine is complet

By the way, it would be great if you would add a check for that in the xorg
packages postinst scripts...
otherwise we risk to have many people with a non-working X when the stable
upgrade Lenny->Squeeze comes...

I've installed linux-image-2.6.32-2-686 from sid, upgraded libdrm2 and
libdrm-intel1 packages, but unfortunately nothing changed. When I start X,
the whole machine stops responding.

Ok, I have started testing this new 2.6.32 and did a little bit better but I
think this was only luck, nothing else.
I could log on and saw this on dmesg:
