I'm reassigning the bug to consolekit. I'll basically take the same
approach as Ubuntu and provide a Xsession script within the consolekit
package. So no patching of xinit is necessary.

xserver 1.4.99.905.
The problem exhibits itself during login to a GNOME session when using
the -vesa video driver, and GDK-based applications such as gdm-greeter
fail to start
