With some help from #debian-x (thanks, guys) it's now WFM for me. What
did I do:
1) install xserver-xorg-video-mga from experimental (1:1.9.99.dfsg.1-1)
2) remove xorg.conf
3) change the display plugs (DVI <-> VGA)
4) use xrandr --output DVI --left-of VGA
