All existing x11proto packages are up to date for X11R7.1, either in
unstable or in experimental. x11proto-core is ahead of schedule, at
latest v7.0.7 rather than 7.1's v7.0.5.

The problem I reported does occur with sid.
It does not occur with the Ubuntu live CD.
So this narrows it down somewhat.
It's software, and the fis probably lies in the differences between
Ubunto and Debian.
