Hello, some news about the bug:
I had the occasion to temporarily change my graphics card and try a Radeon
9250 (detected as "9200PRO 5960"). Doing so my 1400x1050 mode definition
was accepted and I could use it. So the bug may be related to the tdfx
driver, or, the other way round, the radeon dr

For me, it's better to have the priorities reversed. Not defaulting to UTF-8
is a good idea now.
