Ah, i guess the problem comes from the card having both a radeon pci id and a
second function which is listed as 1002:5d44, which displays as ATI
Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE] (Secondary) in lspci output, and it is
this one that X is matching, not the primary one X knows about.

I get the feeling from this bug report that this is actually due to the X
configuration options chosing random monitor frequencies in no rapport to the
realities of the flat panel monitor he is obviously using. And thus X is
trying out frequencies that the monitor doesn't support, g

stop X in some way, the radeonfb text console is corrupted. When i restart X
blindly, then the console is ok again. When i kill X from inside X, then there
