I've wasn't able to reproduce the bug in a fresh install so it's my
system that is messed.

testing and kernel 2.6.3 (because alsa doesn't work with 2.6.6 or 2.6.7

I see now that this constraint comes from xinit.
man xinit says:
xinit [ [ client ] options ] [ -- [ server ] [ display ] options ]
man startx says:
startx [ [ client ] options ... ] [ -- [ server ] options ... ]
I think man xinit is nicer, since it shows you that display -- if given

I was trying to run
startx /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xnest -geometry 640x480 :1
but xterm appeared on :0. In /usr/X11R6/bin/startx I found
# display must be the FIRST server argument
so I tried
startx /usr

Forewarning: This is my first Debian patch. Forgive me if I screw this

The VT switching for Sun keyboards was broken because important keysym
information was missing from /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/sun/us.
