I'm not convinced Felix's bug is the same as mine -- my problems were
with gdm rather than xdm (which has always cooperated quite nicely,
thank you ;-)), and have been better since 4.2.0. (I have seen some
other gdm weirdness on this machine in later tests, but no server
crashes or hangs.)
