puzzling over why it has broken, until my memory dimly recalls

I appear to have independently discovered this problem.
My laptop (ThinkPad A21p) is running Debian 3.0-stable. The Linux
kernel is a custom package made from 2.4.18 sources, but everything
else is "stock," including the X server (xserver-xfree86 4.1.0-16).

You need to recompile the nvidia kernel module. You can't modprobe it
because it isn't there.
But this is exactly what i did. I removed allthe nvidia packages and
installed them new with apt-get install ( i did this
more than once). Then i read the readme in /usr/share/doc/nvidia* and
