Indeed. The xlibs seems to have completely disappeared from woody. I've
got several other packages depending on later versions than I have, but
no xlibs :/

Same results with gcc-2.95.3 and libc6-2.2, so the memcpy patch (and/or not
stripping of libraries) is needed to build x4.0 on m68k with current
packages.

I recently installed the XFree86 4.0.2-1pre2v2 debs
from people.debian.org/~branden and xf86cfg doesn't
seem to work. When I start it, the screen flickers and
shows xf86cfg for a second and then goes blank and
comes back as plain twm. Here is the end of the output
after killing the xserver:
