I just translated search.def from webwml/english/searchtmpl. I don't
understand where to put it. In webwml//searchtmpl? At the
beginning of webwml//searchtmpl/search.wml says that I
should put it in webwml/_ENGLISH_/searchtmpl/ which I think is not

Your browser should have a sort of history, why you don't look there
to see where did you look lately... In Netscape 4.xx go to Communicator,
Tools, History. Msie should have somethinsg similar.
