silently dropping anything I send through exim for some reason, direct
connections to external SMTP ports are blocked, and I couldn't figure out how
to get kmail to do an X-Debbugs-CC.)

do you think? Personally, I'd never have the expectation that I
could just create a chroot and automatically have my machine become a
buildd. OTOH, calling it "--variant=build" instead should still make
the purpose clear without this possible confusion.

Actually, I was thinking buildd-sid, but sid.buildd is fine too.

debootstrap to create its chroot, which means it installs a lot of non
build-essential packages. See #154528.
Also, Anthony Towns has contacted me about this package, and it
appears this may become part of debootstrap instead.
