To make it really useful, CFLAGS should go on the ./configure line,
instead of $(MAKE) line in debian/rules:

Unfortunately, the GPL and the OpenSSL licenses are incompatible. I
guess you should ask the author to relicense his package with explicit
permission to link against OpenSSL.

I've exchanged email with Ardo van Rangelrooij, the previous
maintainer, and I'm fortunate to report that he says he is happy to
