I'm trying to build Ardour from CVS, and it seems to need something called
autopoint. Asking on the Ardour list, I'm told this is in the gettext
package. However, when I look on my "testing" machine, I find that I
already have the package installed, yet the configure script is failing to
find autop

I'm trying to build Ardour from CVS, which appears to be the only way to
get it. I have installed the unstable version of gettext, which it needs,
and now it wants automake 1.5 or greater. I tried to apt-get automake from
unstable, hoping it would be a later version, but there does not seem to be

Sigh, I'm still fighting the battle of trying to compile Ardour (why hasn't
someone done a deb of this).
In any case, I manged to get autogen.sh to run, only to have configure fail
looking for a file called sndfile.pc. It seems to be searching for this
with /usr/bin/pkg-config.

I seem to have screwed up. I set a password for the root users on my mysql
instance, and now apt-get seems to be unable to update that package. It
fails in the configure step.
I'm pretty certain that there must be a place to put this password, so that
the apt-get script can use it, right?

I am probably going to get a new Compaq EVO N 410c laptop. I booted one of
these today off a Knoppix CD, and it seemed to recognize everythign
important, with the possible exception of the modem.
Would it make sense to isntall Knoppix, planing to follow Debian testing?

Can anyone tell me if the built in modem in a Compaq Evo N410c is a
Winmodem or a real mode?
If it's a Winmodem, is it one that can posibly be used under Linux? I know
there _are_ a few of these.

Unfortunatley I gave away the bootable CD I gad made, and I've spent the

Problem is, I can't figure out how to actully install Knoppix. I have a
bootable CD (that was fun because of the size), and everythign
