i have an old windows partition that i have set to be mounted upon boot in
/etc/fstab...
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat defaults 0 2
as the partition is mounted, it hangs there for a bit, and just before that, i
get an odd error message.

i'm having bit of a problem. when i first installed xcdroast (including
cdrecord and mkisofs)) with dselect, it ran me through a little setup for the
cd-rw device and my cdrom. i had to pick which drives i had and name
them. unfortunately, i picked the incorrect drives and i didn't name my cd-
no, no. i don't think i made it clear what i wanted. i saw THAT setup
program. anybody who couldn't find that setup button you spoke up should be
shot. :). i'm looking for a text based setup program. i can't use
xcdroast's. for some reason, it's not showing my cd-rw device, i can't get i

can't seem to find it. i suppose i could do a grep of "sh" but that would take

napster was working fine under my 2.2.14 kernel. but then i compiled the new
2.2.15 kernel with ip masq and firewalling capabilities, which i previously did
not have. now, i can't download anything. can someone give me a hand?

i'm having problems with outdated packages and dselect, ala dpkg. for
instance, the alsa modules at version 4.1 are pretty old. say i want the
updated alsa, for whatever reason. unsupported soundcard, whatever. so i
download the source from alsa and install it. but i also want to install xm
there are several packages included in debian archives that are outdated.
instead of installing the outdated ones, in some cases are useless to me,
i want to compile an updated copy of the source. i'm trying to figure out
how i can compile this source, and let dpkg/dselect know that they've been
