Ok, now, I've just "upgraded" my machine (ASUS CUV4X-M with a celeron
500) and find that I cant get sound to work no matter what I try.
It has a built-in AD (ADI??) 1881 chipset. should I use ALSA for this
one??? has anyone had any luck with these motherboards or these chips?

Hi fokes.
It's hard to find decent computer hardware in New Zealand most if it
is in the states. I was just wanting to know what companies will send
there good's outside of the states. In particular, I'm after one of
those new Plextor 8x4x32 speed drives (IDE).

I dont see any form of problems with doing SMP. Linux isn't too chipset
specific, you might have a problem with video (if you are having
problems with it now, try X 4.0.1, if you've still got problems, bad
luck, get a trio32 or something).

I had the same problem about 2 months ago the solution : install
kernel 2.4.0 test 5 or better. I have test 5 on my machine right
now(I'll get the latest kernel later on, when it's stablised maybe).
just modprobe soundcore, ac97something and then via82cxxx. works like a
charm
