depends on HAL, and thinking that the HAL will soon be the thing in the
past, so I went for the other route: hibernate with kernel

My bad.
The failed environment is a linux-live environment that I built myself.
When mirroring it to HD, everything works fine. So it's actually the live
environment's problem, not sudo's.
Thanks again for your comprehensive tips, which I'll garter bellow in

Hi,
Having updated emacs to v23.2+1-4, I lost the "send mail (with sendmail)"
menu, but get a "send mail (with gnus message)" menu instead. As you
might have guessed, it doesn't work for me.

In order to override whatever my shell environment encoding is, I

However, the trick ceased to work having updated emacs to v23.2+1-4. Now

Hi,
I do almost everything on command line. Maybe the only GUI tool I need is
the sound volume control tool, but I don't have it any more -- I used to
use tkmixer. Now that it's obsoleted, I'm yet to find a GUI sound mixer
plain and simple enough for me.
Just like Gnome/Windows volume control
