Set the default route?

I seem to be having the same problem as some other people in the mailing lists, namely, that the defaultroute for ppp is going to eth0 when that's not my connection. Advising somebody a week or so ago John Hasler suggested: "You probably have a defaultroute pointing to eth0 and pppd won't replace

internet connection

I have just installed the base system on a 68040 Mac with MacOS8 (I am very new to this).  The installation went well and is up and running, but I can't seem to get anywhere on the internet.  ppp is dialing the modem and making the appropriate noises, but the other programs insist that nothing is
