I just moved from 2.2.14 to 2.2.17pre6. Additionally, I recompiled the new
ALSA driver for my card (which I don't believe is part of the problem, but
thought it should be mentioned). My system is Woody, updated about 2 weeks
ago, and the ALSA driver is current Woody.
On rebooting, I immediately

The MB is excellent, as should be the rest (I've got a 700 MHz on the K7V).
I don't know what type of memory you have but if it's one of the good grades
(e.g. Mushkin) you shouldn't have any issues. Potato uses the 2.2.xx
kernels on initial install, yes? The Athlon needs that.

Diald is my nemesis... Various attempts to get it working have failed to

use of the ppp provider script for connecting, and trying to change "noauth"

Where do I change that? A quick glance at this conf files shows no entry.
Why is "kaynjay" passed on rather than the other?

Only thing I know about the Abit is the poorer memory performance due to its
having some TI buffer chip built into the system. I went with the Asus K7V
and haven't looked back.
I have Not explored optimizing the HD, though, so can't address that issue.
The only thing I missed was having an ISA

Rebooting is _never_ foolish if it keeps peace in the family... :-)

It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he
doesn't really need a college education, for he can learn them from
