upgrade to 2.4.18 later when it's actually released.

This is only if the kernel is compiled with CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PROC. With
stock Debian kernels you can find the config in /boot/conig-$(uname
-r).

In Lenny (not sure if its changed as of Squeeze), its the "standard
system" task that installs exim4. Don't install this task and install
your preferred MTA after installation.

The open source radeon drivers should work without a xorg.conf. Try
moving the xorg.conf and running xserver without one. If you are
finding that without a xorg.conf it attempts to load radeon, fails,
then falls back to vesa you could be looking at an issue of
incompatibility.

Yes, and none of those resolution even have a 16:10 aspect ratio. I
would give fglrx drivers a try before doing something drastic like
upgrading to testing. Link: http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary

I find it odd that your disks would be named hdx as modern libata
should emulate those drives as scsi.

DVI-I cables carry both digital and analogue signal. DVI-D carries
digital only. This is especially useful when you run into a situation
where a video card only has DVI connectors but a monitor only accepts
VGA. A converter can easily be used.
