support need to take a break and understand that everyone doesn't
understand Linux/debian the way you do and try to provide *real*
support.

Which is where your problem starts (I think). I suspect you're using
lilo and lilo doesn't like it when you change kernels without telling
it.
Reboot with rescue disk and run lilo with your new kernel and it
*should*
