I never
get a line like that, always 'root:x:0:0:...".
It doesn't even seem to open '/etc/shadow', I don't understand. What
is the content of your /etc/nsswitch.conf, /etc/pam.d/other and
/etc/pam.d/passwd files ?

situation. Have you looked at the date of the passwd.orig file ?
It would have given you an idea of the time where it broke.

What kind of error does cups logs in /var/log/cups/error_log, if any ?
Chances are that you will see something like:
print_job: Unsupported format 'application/octet-stream'!
If this is the case, you'll have to edit /etc/cups/mime.convs and
/etc/cups/mime.types and comment
