I have problem connecting to my ISP.
I am new to debian having used (mostly) Red Hat; I am using 5.2 with exmh
and sendmail to generate this. The problem stems from trying to set up a
gateway between my local network (via eth0) and the Internet ppp0
i.e. this computer has two names and two i/p add
Don't know the answer to the problem but,
my NIS client couldn't bind to my NIS server (itself)
until one day I set up a DNS server (another computer)
for my Intranet. Then NIS started working.
Both computers are in /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf
says try hosts first.
I'm confused.
I tried to upgrade to X version 3.3.4( samosa.debian.org/%7Ebranden/
xfree86-334-slink/ )
as per a recent mailing but failed.
dselect returns the following failure:

After a hardware problem (which I might, or might not have fixed) I have
reinstalled potato on one of my computers. This is used to export /home.
Unfortunately now I can't; I get
rpc.mountd: getfh failed: Function not implemented
Guess I missed something on the re-install. Anybody know what?

I am knee deep into upgrading from slink to potato (test cycle 1, because
I have the CD's ) Previously I had given up on inn and sort of had leafnode
working. I was considering inn again. Fundamental question is does inn
download everything? In other words. I want a news system that downloads

OK so i can 'suck' selected newsgroups.
But I have forgotten how to download the 'active' file
so that I can select appropriate new groups.
How do I do that?

As user chris I have an .xsession as follows:
#!/bin/sh
panel &
gmc &
#exec sawmill
gnome-session
which seems to work ( potato cycle 1 )
but hangs on exit with no 'save etc window'
As user cgc I have an .xsession with just:
gnome-session
which seems to work ok

As an ex Rred Hat user, my midnight commander left me in the current working
directory when I F10 out of it. The Debian version dumps me back to
the original directory. Is there any way to convert my Debian potato MC
to the redhat style?

I installed it on an AMDK62/333 with 128Mram in /usr/local.
Using Potato Test cycle 1
It installed no problem. Vmware complains about AMD chips and Win95, say

and runs too slow in window mode, just about acceptable in full sc
I use nfs for various drives/directories but if I nfs mount a cdrom, when the
client has finished I can't umount it. It says device is busy even when the
client computer has been switched off. I have to reboot the server.
What am I doing wrong?

I have a SCSI CDRW (Yamaha CDW4416S) on my Advansys board.
It worked fine on Slink but hangs the kernel on boot-up every time with
Potato.
I left it disconnected but now it irritates.
My SCSI cdrom is fine.
Why should this be?

In addition to a firewall (pmfirewall) and portsentry I now have
logckeck running. Unfortunately I get a lot of mail saying I am under attack
when I am sure I am not. I can't figure out what it is objecting to and so
put it in the ignore file. Her are a few snippets:

Just to show my complete ignorance, how do you reconfig
How do i run apacheconfig to load modules?
the --force-modules dosen't seem to work and it always comments out the php4
module. I uncommented it and restarted apache but it will only run php code
if the file extension is .php
I didn't get the option to load specific modules at install time, I gu
There has been a lot of traffic about Exim, so I apologise if this is old hat.
I use sendmail (with the 'expensive' option) to deliver local mail immediately
and queue Internet mail until my cron job connects to my dial up ISP and then
does a sendmail -q
Can you do the same with Exim?
Incidentally
Does Debian work with SCSI CDR's?
I have a Yamaha 4/4/16 and it hangs the 2.2.x kernel on bootup.
Slink was fine.
A mate told me there was something in lastmin.html about it but
I never found it myself.

After trying and failing to use INN, I removed it using dpkg and installed
leafnode. I had to use fetch -f but after that it seemed to work fine when I
manually kicked it. But when I added it to my cron.daily job ( su news -c
"/usr/sbin/fetch" ) I get: shell-init: could not get current directory:
All of a sudden fetch (leafnode) reports:
LIST ACTIVE done 586750 seconds ago, issueing NEWSGROUPS
then it seems to repeatedly get the list of newsgroups from demon newserver
until it fills up syslog (>85M) and the var partition.
I do a /usr/sbin/netdate before so the clock should be ok

I have sendmail running on my local network and sending mail to my ISP
every day in a cron job. But local mail only gets sent once a day as well.
So I would like to send local e-mail immediatly and defer (queue) Internet

I bought the Storm Linux box and tried installing on various hardware.
The graphical install, randomly, failed writing the packages. I got the text

Usually I pick up my e-mail by a cron job (Slink, sendmail) but I happend to be
on-line doing something and I noticed 3 e-mails coming in. There are notes in
the log files but the messages have gone missing. I do export
/var/spool/mail. Nothing in /var/spool/mail or mqueue Anybody have any ideas
I would like to set up a computer with two SCSI cards,
probably an Advansys U2W and a NCR. i.e. two different
makes. I know recent Red Hats can cope with this but am
not sure Debian can. Are there any gotchas?

On the uk.comp.os.linux newsgroup recently, a gentleman remarked that he
