didn't help. Oddly enough, I used
this method to install Linux on my computer a couple months ago, and it
worked like a charm. Is it possible the the image file on the web site
is corrupt?

Thanks to John Foster and Kent West for their help. When I used ftp to
download the instalation images, everything worked perfectly.

I've heard of a product called 'php' which is supposed to be good, but
don't have any experience using it.

I recommend GGI (General Graphics Interface -
http://www.ggi-project.org) as an excellent alternative to svgalib that
doesn't suffer from the same limitation.
