Hi list,
I started off from a stable Debian, and got to upgrade some packages
like evolution (and its dependencies) to testing distribution (etch).
Also, in order to install some packages that were only in unstable, i
had to install some dependencies from unstable branch.

Thanks for your help Kevin. The procedure you outlined (below) for

hat way, that the scsi emulation
layer is loaded into the kernel only when needed. That is the reason,
that scsi is not mentioned at system boot time.
I did not manage to get that thing going, although I see no reason, why
that schould be impossible. Try to load all modules you need (scsi_mod,
sr_mod, sg, ide_scsi, etc.) at boot time, by putting them into
'/etc/modules'.
(4) Maybe unloading all scsi modules will help you to avoid a reboot,
but I never tried this (I always did reboot :-()
What looks really strange to me, is the loaded module 'ide-cd'. Judge me
wrong, but I think that that is the thing, you want to replace by
ide-scsi. I strongly suggest to unload 'ide-cd'
Hope that helped a bit.

Mmh ... maybe AMD-756 (seven,*five*, ...) is something different then
AMD74xx (seven, *four*, ...). Just my two cents.

This is cdrecords strategy to avoid buffer underruns.
Maybe you can turn this feature off somehow. What you can do is run
cdrecord with less privileges. Only root is allowed to put processes
into the real time scheduling class.

'/usr/bin/dvips' is in package 'tetex-bin'. This naming pattern should
be very similar to RedHat's.
