Currently, I'm using libreelec as distribution for the HTPC in my home
cinema. It does its job very good, but is inflexible. For example, I
would like to use the same computer as a steam machine or to play other
games using wine or, of course, native linux games which is not possible

I am trying to install debian testing (netinst) inside a VM. My USB devices
do not work, but only when using the debian image. They work fine in ubuntu.

They did. They gave you a /run/user/$UID directory owned by you, and an
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR environment variable whose value points to it that you
use so that its location is configurable. They also gave you a manual
entry.

Yes, I had a similar problem, not so serious, also intel graphics.
I changed the composer from open-gl to Xrender and the problem was gone.
