I've just installed Debian 5.0 on an old computer, and I'm having problems getting a backup USB drive to automount. I have a mount point set up at /media/usb, and I set it to be world readable (drwxrwxrwx). I plug in the drive (it normalLy reads no prblem under Windows7), and I get an error mess

I have tried to see with alsamixer if something looked weird: recording levels as well as play levels on both cards seem OK (Green + while in the columns, just before the red zones). Not sure if you've tried these:- Alsamixer has 'mic-boost', 'capture', 'capture1', & 'internal mic boost'.

You are probably asking a more subtle question that I'm going to answer but ... As far as the root partition itself, just make a new file system in the partition you want to be the new boot and use tar to copy the old root over. Make sure you don't copy anything mounted on root - just root itself
