KDE3 kdeinit no found

I've just installed kde3 on a debian 2.2.12 machine. On startup kdm (Ithink) brings up the kde3 splash screen. I login and the first error box say can't start kdeinit, the second error box says something about a sm???server not being found. I've read a lot of the lists answers about kde3 problem
