The original problem is the following.
I run a Debian server with many users. On users requests, I often install
defferent packages. I am sure that many of those are no longer needed by
the users that requested them. So I want to find and uninstall those.

I've got the CD Audio Player 1.2.5 plugin enabled in xmms, but I don't
find anyway to access the audio CD. If I try mounting it from an Eterm,
the mount fails (presumably because mount expects a data CD rather than
an audio CD).
So how do I play an audio CD in xmms?

DISPLAY to my machine's hostname (!export DISPLAY=prag:0.0"), I get the
error message that this connection is refused by the server? Why? (It

The PC is a IBM 520 8641MDG. (Pentium 133MHz). The motherboard has 8 MCA slots

drive is, and that will give you information on your hard drive usually hdparm

I have 5 nics in a box, ISA 3Com units with pnp disabled. When you are
using the same driver for multiple NICs, they get allocated to interfaces
with the lowest MAC address getting eth0, etc. up the line. At least this
is the way the 3Com driver works on ISA NICs.

since the 2.2.20-compact kernel that I was using did not support sound or

dma enabled. I just
checked and it wasn't enabled here even though I have it on the kernel.
So that might be the problem.

More to the point since I just updated to 2.4.18 myself and noticed on
reboot no nic. whats in /lib/modules. did you run make modules? if your
driver (3c509x.o I think) is in there insmod it and your network should come
back
