XMMS (www.xmms.org) for MP3 -> Wav
and not-LAME (optimized binary of LAME, see freshmeat.net) for wav-mp3
l3enc/l3dec work good too although they are sharewar

I just installed the quake2 deb package, as well as the quake2-dm package.
I've read the setup instructions for copying the cd data to the hard drive
in /etc/quake2deb.conf and done all that.
