My problem was that every time I tried to start a ppp connection, the

At your advice, I have done the following things:
I have checked to see if my kernel supported ppp. As it turns out,
it didn't. But I have fixed that and added ppp support through a
module.

Run pppconfig as root and then use pon to start the connection and poff to

O.k. I've checked the archives, read the howto's, and as well as the
FAQs, but I can't start a ppp connection going to my isp through a
dialup. First, I try wvdial and I get this at the end of the
standard output.
