Try to run xfce_setup then startx. You are not supposed to run
startxfce directly.

I did this: As I wanted to use xfce, i typed: apt-get update with woody (i once
had potato).
Then i installed xfce with apt-get install xfce
As this didn't work and i could not run kde or gnome anymore, i decided to
apt-get dist-upgrade.
