Is leafnode actually running? Is anything listening on port 119 of
localhost?

I've just installed leafnode package (version 1.11.3.rel2) on a
testing/unstable machine and I'm having trouble using it. It
works so far as getting the active list from the server, but when
I try to access the local server by setting NNTPSERVER=127.0.0.1
and running slrn, I get the following erro
