My guess is that the addressing on the Seagate is somehow different than
on the Maxtor, which makes it less straight
I had a linux system on a 120 Gb hard disc (Maxtor DiamondMax plus 9).
At some point is stopped working, and I thought the head had crashed.
It appeared that it was only a controller failure, and it was possible
to transfer the contents to another 120 Gb disc (a Seagate ST3120026A).
