The problem is, the software is looking for the wrong interrupt. That's why
the response is so slow.
Look in /proc/pci for something that sounds like a modem. There should be
something that tells you what the irq is. use setserial to change the irq
setting that the software is looking for "s
I have a Best Data 56K external modem to. I was having problems with it
taking forever to initialise, and it would also go off line constantly. I
found that moving it too /dev/ttyS1 using irq 3 seemed to improve the
performance. Before I had the modem set to /dev/ttyS2 using irq 5. Try
putting

I got a similar problem sometime ago (2 years really) and problem was a
conflic with
the mainboard. This one had several "extra"-chips (audio etc ... ).
I tryed to disable tose on setup and i got my modem ran as a devil.
Could be this on :)
