Yes, that was the problem. I was running on 24bit color. I changed
to 16bit.

mysterious about the solution, was there :o) I
guess what threw me is that I hadn't changed any mime types or applications
settings, so I supposed some arcane file had gotten corrupted. Ah well.

A couple days ago I sent a cry for help because my Netscape had suddenly
stopped working. I got a number of helpful replies, for which I thank
