Although I can't tell you what went wrong, don't reinstall yet. Using a
windows machine, head over to tomsrtbt:
http://www.toms.net/rb/home.html
There is a version to install from windows.
With tomsrtbt, you will be able to mount your original root partition and
fix the problem.
