Well, no it wasn't, but I tried setting it by hand and it seems to have no effect.
I did
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/lib/java
export JAVAC=/usr/local/lib/java/bin/javac
but I still get
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
