Maybe problems on connecting localhost. Try "ifup lo". If it helps,
check if there is "auto lo" line in in the interfaces file. man

check your ulimits (ulimit -a) i get that error because my ulimits are
quite strict and when i exceed the limits it prevents me from doing so and
pukes with that error. currently i have ulimit's for memory set at
24,000kB for virtual memory and 12,000kB for memory.
