I didn't know about hdparm. After using apt-get to install the package
it reported there was no /dev/hdd. This led me to review the kernel
options as I had recompiled it many times recently trying to get a
wireless usb adapter to work. Somehow, I can't imagine when or how,
scsi emulation was tur

You could also try set in the append option in lilo: ignore=hdd (or hdc) this
will make the system ignore if there are hdc or hdd and ide-scsi will work
fine. Also verify that in /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh You don't have any hdparm
command pointing to the concerned drive.
