Another respondent suggested I run XFree86 -configure to get a starting config file. I did, and it worked - although low res and distorted. I then restored my original guess at synch rates, and got my original symptons, which confirms your suggestion that my problem is related to sync rates. I h

I did at your suggestion. And it worked - thanks. I now have a display, although low res and distorted. Another person suggested it was probably sync rates - so, my monitor is a Compaq Presario MV500. I've been to their web page and can find no specifics on horizontal and verticle refresh rates.
