Try /sbin/ifconfig. This will show all devices including the loopback
device (lo) with ip 127.0.0.1, but you are looking for ppp0 (the number
may vary). In the second line of that section you will find
inet addr:

I know it's not the answer to your specific question, but in terms of
getting your IP address There's More Than One Way To Do It (tm) :-)
On my LinkSys DSL router I use a Perl script which uses LWP and
HTML::TreeBuilder to get the stat
