the North America mirror sites listed in download section on
www.blackdown.org)

Looks like I'm answering my own question, in part because I did not
RTFM until after asking. I apologise for this all too common
peccadillo.
This was a no brainer. My libc is older than Blackdown jdk 1.2.2
wants. Quoting from one of the README files:

getting it to work after following the instructions in the
README.linux file. I tested a program that uses the Swing library
that comes with jdk-1.2 and it works just fine.
I have slink installed and all I did was to add /usr/jdk
