HP Printer Troubles

Low-end HP ink-jets are problematic since the mechanism is in the cartridge. After experimenting with hplip setup parameters to try to fix some color problems, I cannot get back to the former, default settings. While the GUI shows everything as default values, I am in some strange printing mode.

Thank you Andrew J. Perrin. After your last message, I ran dpkg -l and found that gs had not been installed when I thought it was. I reran the installation. Both Star Office and Netscape are now printing.

I forgot to answer one question of the following; What happens when you try to print? Anything? Is there anything in /var/log/lp-acct, /var/log/lp-errs, or /var/log/lpr.log? Have you tried using magicfilter to handle printing? (I haven't used Opera, but Netscape and SO both print fine for me.

You need to start up the printer daemon. Only a priveleged user can do this so try: $su <(enter your root password)> #lpd #exit Then try and print the file again. Normally, you should get the lpd daemon started automatically at start-up, so you may well get an erro
