can you get the relevant dmesg when plugged directly and plugged to the hub?
it could be hub is not accepting mtp or phone is reporting different id.

Yes, Frederic,
My Hub is self-powered, Cable for smartphone looks ok, as long as I use the
same one to connect to PC USB directly and it works. Seems like HUB is
unable to work with MTP device. Also, I cannot try to connect smartphone
with HUB cable becaue they are totally incompatible.

installed dropbox on my phone and desktop to move stuff back and forth,

Hello,
Just noticed an interesting thing
Have an MTP Xiaomi smartphone device, all relevant packages installed.
Also have M-Audio M-track HUB external soundcard with 3 USB ports.
When connecting MTP device to HUB, have message in dmesg about Xiaomi, but
it does not mount and cannot be accessed.
